Floats like a bag of cement! - (2/5)
The definition of a simulation is that it is a representaion of something real, in a simulated environment. Every aspect is supposed to be realistic, so that you could effectively plan out a scenario and see what might happen.
Ship Simulator 2006 has "realistic" graphics, every drop of water reflective, every wave convincing. Its controls are also "realistic" Throttle Left with the rudder right and your effectively straffing as you should be.
If i fly my Spitfire from Flight simulator into the ground it detonated into a hundred peice, Sail my ship in ship simulator into a speeding cargo ship and WHAT THE HELL!, im being pushed along upturned, still fully capable of moving the rudder and throttle back and forth. "realistically" i'd be diving overboard and watching my boat fly apart and the cargo ship barely be affected. Instead the cargo boat wants to do a 180 degree spin, only to hit the bank at flank spped, but its ok, he just bounces back unaffected, and goes on his way undettered by these miricles.
In-depth YES, Good looking, YES. Fun, NO. Funny, YES, BUT NOT IN A GOOD WAY!

Ride the waves? - (3/5)
The first time I saw Ship Simlutor I had interest in the new type of simlutor and new controls. I brought the game and played it for about 30 minutes before I got bored of it, the basic lack of excitment is a major letdown for this game. Obviously when taking control of a ship like the "Titanic" the speed will not blow you away because you can't go much faster than 21mph, but being able to walk around the decks of the great ship should be great right?...Wrong.
I have a recent computer with a good graphics card. When walking around the Titanic's Deck it took me about ten minutes to walk from one end to the other. The gap in between each step is about 2-3 seconds. I'm basically trying to say that the game can be very slow at times. The only ship/boat I enjoyed driving was the Powerboat, this boat was very fast and easy to control once I got the idea of how to steer it.
But having said all the negative I should also give you the good points to the game. Firstly the player's boat/ship graphics are close to perfect, the details on some of them are remarkable. The water, the grahpics on the water are excellent, the splashes are good fun to watch and the wash from the vessel is quite realistic. All this requires a very good grahpics card, otherwise the game will move slower.
Overall the game is good to play if you are really (and I mean really) into the genre. Otherwise you'll only enjoy it for a short while.

A truly awful game - (1/5)
I own every MS Flight Sim as well as Train Simulator, so I thought I would give this sim a try. I wish I hadn't. It's fun for the first 15 minutes before you realise that there really isn't much to this game at all.
The graphics look terribly dated despite being a brand new game. None of the textures other than the water are reflective and the ship models look 5 or 6 years old.
The user interface is awful, from the low res charts to the ugly menu and other than controlling the power and rudder, it really doesn't get much more complicated.
The 'missions' are a poor, last minute attemt to try and make the game more interesting.
Too simple, too slow and it looks dated already.
Verdict: For the sim maniacs only.

Ship Simulator - (3/5)
I bought Ship Simulator expecting quite a lot. I somehow expected lots of different buttons, different 'steering' things for each ship and good graphics.
To start with, my computer isn't the fastest, so the graphics wouldn't be great anyway, but the water that you are on is pretty rubbish, the boats have a steering wheel and this lever thing, for all 8 boats. The 'walk around' Titanic is the decks only, not inside. The control of the ships - yes you can steer the ships but that's it. No lights or horns or alarms or radios or anything else. Not like, for example Train Simulator.
I guess if your computer is fast and has a really good graphics card then the graphics would be great, but it seems to jumpy and slow on mine.
If your computer matches all the specs then you should MAYBE consider, if not, forget you saw it or prepare to be bored. And Quickly.

Great - (5/5)
This game lets you control 8 different boats/ ships in various scenarios and sceneries. The scenarios start easily enough- things like navigating ciruits using a harbor patrol boat, and simple cargo runs. Later scenarios will see you trying to guide the Titanic into Rotterdam harbour! All of the scenarios are challenging, and when you have beat one, it records your time, so you can always come back to try and beat it. Graphically, Ship Simulator is gorgeus. From the harbours of Hamburg and Rotterdam, to carribean islands, all are in spectacular detail, as are the water textures, and the ships themselves. Overall the is a very addictive and enjoyable game. Recommended to anyone.
